BOONE COUNTY, Ky. — A former Kentucky teacher has been charged with rape and sodomy amid allegations that she had sex with a student.

According to WKRC-TV, Boone County sheriff's deputies arrested former Walton-Verona High School teacher Mollie Verkamp, 27, of Florence, on Thursday, a year after detectives began investigating her.

The Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post Thursday that the school district initially contacted deputies last year, alleging that Verkamp had been "sending sexually explicit videos and text messages" to an 18-year-old student.

"During the course of that investigation, Verkamp told detectives she had previously taught at a high school outside of Boone County for two (2) years and went on to admit that she had sent the same kind of sexually explicit messages to a another student at that high school," read the post, which said that student was 17.

Verkamp, who said she had known the student's age, later had sex with him in her Boone County home, the Sheriff's Office said.

She was no longer a school district employee during the 2019-2020 academic year or when she was arrested, deputies said.

Verkamp, who faces charges of third-degree rape and sodomy, was taken to the Boone County Detention Center, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Her bail has been set at $10,000.
