6-week-old infant dies of COVID-19 in Texas, official says

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A 6-week-old infant has died in Nueces County due to the coronavirus, Corpus Christi city councilman Ben Molina said Friday in a posted on social media.

“Sadly, the (Corpus Christi -- Nueces County Public) Health District just received notice of a COVID-19 related death of a six week old infant,” he wrote in the statement. “My deepest condolences go out to the family.”

The death is the first related to coronavirus involving a child under the age of 4, KIII-TV reported.

No additional details were immediately released.

As of Thursday, the last date for which data was available, more than 230,000 coronavirus cases have been confirmed across Texas. Of those, nearly 5,000 were reported in Nueces County.

State health officials said nearly 3,000 people have died of COVID-19 in Texas.
