Suspect in deadly Ohio shooting captured; victims identified

BUTLER TOWNSHIP, Ohio — Four people were fatally shot in a southwestern Ohio city on Friday, and a man considered “armed and dangerous” has been apprehended by police in Kansas.

Police in Butler Township, located north of Dayton, were called shortly before noon in response to shots being fired, WHIO-TV reported. Police found four victims at multiple crime scenes,” and they were pronounced dead at the scenes, according to Butler Township police Chief John Porter.

Update 11:22 p.m. EDT Aug. 6: WHIO reported that Stephen Marlow has been captured. Butler Township police said Marlow was taken into custody in Lawrence, Kansas. He was arrested just before 10 p.m.

Update 11 p.m. EDT Aug. 6: Police have identified the victims of the deadly shooting.

Officials said Eva Knox, 78, and Clyde Knox, 82, were found dead in their home. The other two victims were identified as Sarah Anderson and her 15-year-old daughter Kayla, who was a student at Vandalia-Butler High School, WHIO reported.

The alleged suspect, Stephen Marlow, is still on the run and is being asked to turn himself in. Despite not being in custody, he is facing four counts of aggravated murder. State and federal arrest warrants have been issued. He faces federal charges of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution, WHIO reported.

Original report: “We are working to determine if there is any motive to this horrible tragedy or if mental illness played any role,” Porter said during a news conference. He called the shooting “the first violent crime in this neighborhood in recent memory.”

The names of the victims have not been released.

Porter identified Stephen Marlow, 39, as a person of interest in the shooting, according to WHIO.

Marlow is believed to have fled the area in an SUV, according to The Associated Press. The vehicle was described as a white 2007 Ford Edge with Ohio plate JES 9806, WXIX-TV reported.

According to the FBI, Marlow has ties to Indianapolis, Chicago and Lexington, Kentucky, and could be in any of those cities, according to the television station.

In a statement, the Butler Township Police Department said it was continuing to investigate the shooting and are being assisted by Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, the FBI and the Bureau of Tobacco and Firearms.
