Hurricane Laura Makes Landfall; Lighting Beat Boston

Hurricane Laura made landfall this morning around 1 am near Cameron, Louisiana with winds gusting to 134 miles per hour. One one point before landfall Laura was a Category 5 storm, but was a Category 4 at landfall. Reports of severe flooding and storm surge are already being reported along with strong winds. The Tampa Bay Lightning whipped the Boston Bruins 7-1 last night in game three of the best-of-seven series. Power play goals came from Ondrej Palat, Mikhail Sergachev and Alex Killorn. Game four is Friday night at 7:30 pm.

The CDC has made changes to testing and quarantine guidelines that have many health officials wondering why. The new guidelines do not require a test if you’re not showing any symptoms and drops the suggested quarantine of 14 days after domestic or international travel which is a reversal from previous recommendations. The suggested social distancing, of wearing a mask, washing your hands are still advised. There has been a surge in COVID-19 cases overseas.

COVID-19 cases in Florida rose by 3,220 Wednesday. The state total is now 608,722 with 10,733 losing their lives to the virus. Governor Ron DeSantis held a press conference with representatives from Walt Disney World, Universal and SeaWorld Wednesday. DeSantis is backing a plan to allow increased capacity at theme parks and complemented them on their safety measures. Disney will cut back hours at all parks in September; Universal has already done that.

At the University of Tampa, students have already been suspended, and more are being warned against any more large gatherings on or off campus by dean of students Stephanie Russell Krebs. One was held last week and university officials are asking students to report any more violations. It’s the same at USF. The Dean of Students, Danielle McDonald, let students know that anyone caught at a large parties will get a reminder first, but can be expelled if caught again. Off-campus apartments also received a letter with that warning.
