Aftermath Of Hurricane Sally

Hurricane Sally is now a tropical storm but is still bringing heavy, record rainfall to parts of the south. Sally made landfall near Gulf Shores, Alabama and left half of million without power. Winds were at 105 mph at landfall but the storm has weakened to a tropical depression and is moving to the northeast through Georgia and the Carolina’s, with a least one death as a result of the storm. There are more storms on the map from the National Hurricane Center that include a weakening Tropical Storm Vicky and Hurricane Teddy which is on track to go up the northeast coast of the US. The Lightning play game six tonight and a win will send them to the Stanley Cup finals against the Dallas Stars. The Lightning lost game five in a double overtime effort without Brayden Point playing. Game six is tonight at 6 pm. If a game seven is necessary that would be Saturday night at 7:30 pm.

A story in this morning’s Tampa Bay times details how four boaters from the Bay area on a boat that left from Davis islands had to be rescued from rough waters kicked up by Hurricane Sally yesterday. The weather was too rough for a chopper rescue from the Coast Guard, so it was a container ship that made the rescue. COSCO Malaysia from Hong Kong, owned by China Ocean Shipping Company Shipping Lines got them four off the ship with no injuries, and back home to the Port of Tampa.

Tampa City Council approved the city’s $1.3 billion dollar budget for fiscal 2021 yesterday. The budget includes an increase of $13 million to the Tampa Police Department allocation of $176 million. Tampa Mayor Jane Castor noted that due to COVID-19 the city spend some $43 million dollars to cover things like help for businesses, overtime pay and safety supplies.

That makes it the most expensive piece of real estate on the market in Tampa Bay with 22,000 square feet of living space. Pasco County Schools will make rapid COVID-19 testing available to students and teachers at three sites starting today. The sites are at Land O' Lakes High School, Gulf Middle School and Pasco Elementary School.

COVID-19 cases in Florida increased by 2,335 Wednesday. The state total is now 671,201 Florida resident deaths are approaching 13,00 with 12,939, reported. Florida Senators Senators Marco Rubio and Rick Scott have filed a bill to keep the country on Daylight Saving Time through November of 2021. It’s been tried before with the Sunshine Protection Act that failed. That bill requires congressional approval.
