We’re Just Sipping The Dog

Sorry, but I just can’t get on board this crazy trend. Gross comes to mind, but ever since a fan at Yankee Stadium was spotted sipping his brew through a hot dog, in place of a straw, it’s all anyone can talk about or try. That little clip went viral last Monday, so now the crosstown rival Mets started trolling the team on Twitter. A few of my friends down the hall gave it a try and as expected it’s not something they’ll do again. But would you, or should the dog be steamed or grilled of optimum sippage?

There’s another way to enjoy a dog that doesn’t involve dunking it in beer, but I’m not sure about this one either. Oscar Meyer has a new product in the freezer section called the “Cold Dog.” As you’ve probably already guessed, it’s a hot dog-flavored frozen pop. But finding one may take a little work, you can only find them at select Popbar locations. Or you could just throw your favorites in the freezer and go from there. Either way, ewww.

Coming up Monday in Ann Kelly’s Kitchen, a chat with Jeff Houck Vice President of Marketing Columbia Restaurant Group and now author of “The Cuban Sandwich - A History in Layers.” I’ve always said if you want to start a good food fight, ask who makes the best Cuban, and stand back. You can also take a look at my visit to the Columbia Ybor for a behind the scenes look at how their classic Cuban is made. See you then!

WORDS OF WISDOM FROM ANN KELLY’S KITCHEN

“Now I have been known to say, “I need a new set of screwdrivers. I need a new wrench. I need some hammers,” and of course I don’t need any of those things; what I need is a deep fried hot dog and I just don’t know how to say it.” - Alex Guarnaschelli, Food Network Star
