The woman, whose name was not released, was 50 years old and visually impaired, WSMV reported.

Nashville police said the woman was walking across a bridge with her dog when she was hit Wednesday morning.

A passerby found her and alerted authorities. She was taken to an area hospital, where she died.

The woman’s dog, however, was not hurt and walked home, waiting at the front door of her apartment which was near the accident scene, WTVF reported.

Police are trying to find the woman’s next of kin, and until they do the dog is in the care of animal control. If the family wants the dog, they can take custody. But if it doesn’t work out, the dog will be placed up for adoption, WKRN reported.
