A department-issued Chevrolet Tahoe SUV driven by Chief William McManus was broken into outside his home, with a thief taking off with his ballistic vest, the San Antonio Express-News reported.

Police believe the break-in happened between 9 and 9:15 p.m. CST, according to the newspaper.

According to a police report, a passerby noticed someone dressed in a red hoodie inside the vehicle, KSAT-TV reported.

When the suspect was illuminated by the witness’ headlights, they jumped out of the SUV and into a gray car, according to KENS-TV.

“How many times do you see or read about people getting guns stolen from their cars, purses stolen from their cars, computers, whatever it may be?” McManus said, according to WOAI-TV. “I’ve been preaching that for years. Don’t leave things in your vehicle!”

No other information has been released about the break-in or the suspect, according to the television station.

It is unclear whether McManus will have to pay for the missing vest or face any disciplinary action, WOAI reported.
