‘South Park’ returns with hourlong coronavirus episode; other shows to incorporate COVID-19 storylines into season

It’s been more than nine months since the new last episode of “South Park” was aired.

The controversial adult animated show is hitting the coronavirus pandemic head on.

Comedy Central announced Tuesday the show will air Sept. 30 at 8 p.m. and then will be available on HBO Max 24 hours later, Entertainment Weekly reported.

It is the first hourlong episode of the animated show, which started running in 1997. But they did have a three-part episode that aired over three weeks in 2007.

The show will tackle the adjustments that have had to happen to send the “South Park” characters — Stan, Cartman and Kyle — back to school. But when they get there, nothing is as it was before the pandemic hit, Entertainment Weekly reported.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone will write and direct the episode, as they have done for every one since 1997, Variety reported.

There still isn’t any announcement when "South Park” Season 24 will begin airing, Rolling Stone reported.

“South Park” isn’t the only television show that will be doing a coronavirus pandemic storyline. “One Day at a Time” aired a special in June, Variety reported. “All Rise” aired a new episode in May incorporating the pandemic, TV Insider reported.

“This is Us” will also introduce COVID-19 into its storytelling but will stay within the storyline that had already been established, Vulture reported.

The Hollywood Reporter and TV Insider compiled a list of shows that will also introduce the pandemic into the storylines.

Those shows include:

  • “Shameless,” Showtime
  • “Grown-ish,” Freeform
  • “You,” Netflix
  • “The Good Fight," CBS All Access
  • “9-1-1,” Fox
  • “9-1-1: Lone Star," Fox
