Runaway ram briefly closes Oakland highway

OAKLAND, Calif. — A runaway ram led authorities on a wild and woolly chase on a highway Friday morning in Oakland.

Officials with the California Highway Patrol received a call about 7:20 a.m. about an animal running in the northbound lanes of State Route 13, KUTV reported. Initially, the officers did not find any animals, but 40 minutes later a ram was seen trotting along Interstate 580, the television station reported.

Using traffic breaks, troopers shut down the highway and tried to corral the ram, but the animal sprinted away, KUTV reported. After zigzagging through several streets, the ram was finally caught by animal control officers when it ran into a church parking lot, the television station reported.

The animal was unharmed, but one trooper sustained a minor injury to his hand as he tried to stop the ram, officials said.
