Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II’s youngest child, Prince Edward, 57, said the family would have liked Philip to have had the celebration of living to 100, but the prince consort would not have wanted the spotlight.

He didn’t really want “all the fuss and bother,” Prince Edward told the BBC, The Associated Press reported. “I think he wasn’t really looking forward to the centenary, even if we were.’

But Edward said his father will always live in people’s memory.

“Everybody will have their own memories,” Edward said, according to the AP. “He was that sort of larger-than-life person. Once met, never forgotten.”

Prince Charles, 72, posted two photos as a remembrance to Instagram, one of which showed him as a child, holding his father’s hand after Prince Philip returned from a trip to Malta in 1951. The photo had the simple caption, “Remembering The Duke of Edinburgh, on what would have been his 100th birthday.”

Prince William and Kate Middleton shared a photo of the Queen alone looking over her roses, with the caption “Today we remember His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, on what would have been his 100th birthday.

“Last week, The Queen was gifted a Duke of Edinburgh rose by @The_RHS, of which her Majesty is Patron.”

Princess Eugenie, who named her son after her great grandfather, shared a photo of the Queen and the Prince during Eugenie’s 2018 wedding, People magazine reported.

“Thinking of Grandpa on what would have been his 100th birthday,” she wrote in the caption.

Prince Philip died on April 9, two months before his 100th birthday, the AP reported.
