The mysterious donor dropped a 1980 South African gold Krugerrand into a red kettle at the Kroger at 9 Mile on Tuesday night, the Salvation Army said in a news release. This is the 10th consecutive year that someone has gifted a Krugerrand into a red kettle in Macomb County.

The coin is estimated to be worth $1,765, according to the Salvation Army of Metro Detroit. The organization said the coin has brought it closer to its 2022 Red Kettle Christmas Campaign fundraising goal of $8.2 million.

The Salvation Army uses the money it raises during its campaign to serve meals, offer shelter, provide Christmas toys and gifts for children and seniors, and help those in need resolve legal issues, WDIV reported.
