Florida man flees crash with backpack full of drugs, hides in fire station, police say

CLEARWATER, Fla. — A Florida man was arrested for drug trafficking after he ran from a crash and hid in a fire station with a backpack full of drugs, authorities said.

Delmetrice Wilson, 24, a passenger in a car crash Thursday, ran from the scene and to a nearby building, not realizing it was a fire station, WFLA reported.

He stashed a backpack filled with drugs between two buildings before running into the fire station to hide, investigators said.

Police responded to the crash, and a witness showed them the stashed backpack, which contained codeine, crack cocaine, alprazolam, MDMA and marijuana. The fire department also notified police, who arrested Wilson on various drug charges.

“If you run from a traffic crash you’ve just been involved in, and you’re carrying a backpack full of drugs, it’s probably not a good idea to hide in the nearby firehouse,” Clearwater police said on social media.

Wilson is being held in jail on a $61,000 bond, according to jail records.
