Coronavirus: Marriott will require all guests nationwide to wear face masks beginning July 27

Marriott announced Monday that all guests nationwide will be required to wear masks in public spaces beginning July 27 to combat the novel coronavirus.

“Health experts have made it clear that wearing face coverings in public spaces is one of the easiest steps that we can all take to protect one another and reduce the spread of COVID-19,” Marriott CEO Arne Sorenson said in a video announcement.

Following American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA)’s “Safe Stay Guest Checklist” announcement last week, Marriott International will require all guests to wear a face covering in its hotels effective July 27.

The American Hotel & Lodging Association, which represents the hotel industry, issued industrywide guidelines last week for enhanced health and safety protocols amid the pandemic and said several major chains will require face masks for guests in public spaces, The Hill reported.

In addition to Marriott, the association also counts Hilton, Hyatt, IHG, Loews Hotels, Radisson and Wyndham among its member hotels considering mask mandates and social distancing. The association’s coronavirus-conscious guidelines also include:

• Considering daily room cleaning only if necessary.

• Contactless reservations, check-ins, payments and room service where available.

• Asking guests to refrain from traveling if they have, or recently had, any symptoms of COVID-19 or contact with anyone diagnosed with COVID-19.

“As an industry, we want every guest to experience a clean and safe hotel no matter where they stay,” Chip Rogers, AHLA president and CEO, said in a statement. “These preventative measures make it safer and easier for Americans to travel while also supporting hotel and tourism employees.”
