WeatherTech shooting: Police ID suspected gunman after 1 killed, 2 injured

BOLINGBROOK, Ill. — Three people were wounded, one fatally, in a shooting at a suburban Chicago warehouse early Saturday, authorities said.

Bolingbrook police officers responded to a WeatherTech warehouse at about 6:25 a.m. CDT, department spokesperson Capt. Anthony Columbus told WLS-TV.

Update 12:05 a.m. EDT June 26: Police identified the suspected shooter on Saturday as Charles C. McKnight Jr., 27, of Chicago, WGN-TV reported.

According to police, McKnight worked through a temporary employment agency and had been assigned to the WeatherTech facility since June 9, the TV station reported.

Although the investigation remains ongoing, preliminary reports indicate that WeatherTech employees confronted McKnight near the end of the overnight shift for allegedly robbing two coworkers at gunpoint, WBBM-TV reported.

The argument led to the shooting, and McKnight was found in possession of a watch and wallet he was accused of stealing from coworkers when he was arrested. Police also found a firearm, the TV station reported.

The victim who died has been identified as Central Hightower, 37, from Plainfield, Illinois, WGN reported.

The victim who is in critical condition is a 25-year-old man and was also one of the earlier robbery victims, police said. The third victim, who was treated and released, is a 43-year-old man, the TV station reported.

According to WGN, McKnight is facing first-degree murder and attempted murder charges.

Update 12:43 p.m. EDT June 25: In a statement, the Bolingbrook Police Department said one person died. Another victim is in critical condition, while the third person wounded has been released from an area hospital.

Original report: Officials confirmed the shootings and the number of people injured, but did not release information on their conditions or the extent of their wounds, according to WGN-TV.

According to police, the suspected gunman fled the scene but was later located and detained at approximately 9:25 a.m. CDT, WLS reported.
