Lighting Lose To Toronto

The Tampa Bay Lightning lost to the Toronto Maple Leafs by a score of 4-3 in game five last night in the NHL playoffs. The series comes back to AMALIE Arena for a must-win game six Thursday night at 7:30 pm. Game seven would be back in Toronto. There was some good news for the Lighting with Victor Hedman named as a Norris Trophy award finalist for the sixth consecutive season.

The Environmental Protection Agency is being sued by environmental groups in Florida that include Save the Manatee Club, Center for Biological Diversity, and Defenders of Wildlife for not doing enough to protect manatees. The suit alleges water quality standards are not strong enough, and that led to pollution in areas like Indian River where the seagrass manatees eat was decimated, leading to the feeding program.

Gas prices are hitting record highs again. The new national average is now at $4.36 per gallon according to GasBuddy. You might have to curtail your summer driving plans as well with prices continuing to rise going into Memorial Day. Gas prices are $1.36 higher than this time last year, according to AAA.

Another Pulitzer Prize for the Tampa Bay Times. The series “Poisoned” won for bringing the danger at a local lead smelter to light. This makes the 14th Pulitzer for the Times and the third for investigative reporting.

Robert A. “Bobby” Raymond died of septic shock after a cut on his leg became infected following a day at Mobbly Beach Park in Oldsmar. Raymond was a well-known horse trainer in the Bay area, and died at Mease Countryside Hospital in Safety Harbor Sunday.

A statue that was a gift to the city of Tampa by Cuba is back on display. The statue is called “Honor To The Mothers Of The World” and was in a city warehouse. The statue went back on display just in time for Mother’s Day in Ybor City. You can see it at the Children’s Board headquarters on Palm Avenue.
