Ian Recovery Begins

After making landfall twice in Florida and diminishing to a tropical storm, Ian is now stronger and on a path for South Carolina and once again brining the threat for life-threatening storm surge. The most devastated areas of southwest Florida now being the process of recovery with federal funds low available as well as from floridadisaster.org and at redcross.org. We have more information in the Dove Hurricane Guide for questions you may have on everything from cleanup to how to apply for assistance.

Flooding is still a major concern thanks to the amount of rain. Sarasota County had the most at almost 20 inches of rain, and that continued into DeSoto, Manatee, Hardee and Polk counties with 10-16 inches. Flood warnings were issued Thursday for The Peace River at Zolfo Springs, Manatee River near Myakka Head, as well as the Anclote River near Elfers in Pasco County. The National Weather Service is also warning of major flooding in Sarasota County affecting the Myakka River.

Power is still out to millions of Floridians. Florida Power and Light, Duke Energy, TECO, and the Peace River Electric Cooperative. If you are still without power, check directly with your provider for updates when power might be restored. The Power Outage web site can also show you how we’re doing statewide.

Tampa Bay is beginning to reopen from airports to drive throughs and this list from 10 Tampa Bay will give you some idea of what to expect. Tampa International Airport and St Pete/Clearwater International Airport will open at 10 am. You may encounter some delays and cancellation at airports so please check ahead on that. Orlando theme parks will begin a phased approach since that area was also hard hit, so check with them before you head over.

What do we do with all the debris left over from Ian? If you have the means to get it to your landfill that a good option, and many counties will have crews out today to pick it up as well. Our partners from 10 Tampa Bay have a list of pickup areas and times, and you can check with your county directly on social media for updates.

There were a lot of rescues, but this one in Tampa was one of the cutest, thanks to the Tampa Police Department who named tiny refugee “Stormie” from the middle of Florida Avenue at the height of the storm. Stormie has already found a home after a quick checkup at the Veterinary Emergency Group.
