Food Stamp Recipients Face Changes

Food stamp benefits will be available to Floridians in February but in a slightly different way. It’s going to be a lump sum payment at the end of this month. That’s due to the government shutdown. But there are concerns if recipients will get the word and they will budget appropriately.

The Humane Society of Tampa Bay joins a growing list of agencies helping out during the government shutdown. Free food will be available with proof of ownership at the shelter on Armenia Avenue weekday from noon to 7 pm, and weekends 10 am to 5 pm.

Monday is Martin Luther King Day and groups across the Bay area will be commemorating the life of Dr. King. Tampa, St Pete and Brooksville all have parades planned. Other cities will be hold celebrations as well. The offices of Cox Media Group will also be closed for the day.

St Pete/Clearwater International Airport is doing well. This past year saw 2,237,440 passengers use the airport and that’s a record for the fourth year in a row. Floridian’s Food Stamps Available For February

A human trafficking investigation by St Pete Police netted six suspects. That sting began back in May when police in Louisiana asked SPPD to help find a 17 year old boy they believed was in St Pete. There’s more on the story here, and to reach the Human Trafficking Hotline call 1-888-373-7888.

Food Banks Assist Workers During Shutdown

Tampa International Airport is hosting a food pantry to help workers who are not being payed during the government shutdown stating today. The pantry will be at the airport’s Police Training Center at 5020 West Shore Blvd and will be open noon to 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.  Other groups are also helping out and you can check that list here.

Two Florida Highway Patrol troopers are being credited with saving a man’s life Sunday afternoon. Trooper Tabarie Sullivan saw the on the northbound side and managed to talk him down and restrain him with the help off off-duty officer Captain Richard Benton. The man is safe and was Baker acted.

A Sarasota man caught an Amazon delivery man walking right into his house without permission. Michael Lentini saw him on his home security camera and was in the apartment elevator coming home and had the left the door unlocked.It’s the third time Lentini said this has happened.

Heroic Rescue In Pasco County

A 97 year old Pasco County woman was rescued from her burning bedroom by two Pasco County Sheriff’s Deputies Thursday morning. The body cam footage from Deputy Justin Ball and Corporal Jeffrey Browne show them carrying Mariah Logan to safety. Deputy Ball did inhale a lot of smoke and went to the hospital to get checked out, and everyone’s okay.

Bucs Name New Head Coach

The Bucs made it official yesterday, naming Bruce Arians as their new head coach. Arians left the Arizona Cardinals back in 2017 and now becomes the 12th coach in Bucs history. Former Bucs head coach Dirk Koetter goes back to his old job back as offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons.

Gas Prices Fall In Bay Area

Gas prices in the Bay area continue to fall with an average cost of $2.03 a gallon. AAA says their survey also shows plenty of stations that are below $2.00 per gallon and they expect it to stay that was thanks to the crude oil supply and a weaker stock market.

Seven people are now confirmed dead after a fiery crash on on 75 near Gainesville Thursday. The crash happened in the southbound lanes. All nouthbound lanes were reopened last night but damage to the southbound lanes may create delays today.

One Winner For Mega Millions Jackpot

You can stop losing sleep over the Mega Millions jackpot. One winning ticket worth $425 million dollars was sold in New York. That was the first drawing for the new year. The jackpot start to build again for the next drawing on Friday night.

Three Confirmed Tornadoes Thursday

Three tornadoes were confirmed during yesterday severe weather. One was in Myakka City in Manatee County, the second and third were both in Polk County - one in Crooked Lake Park south of Lake Wales and another just to the east of North Meade. Straight line winds were responsible for damage to 80 homes in the Forest Lake Estates Community in Pasco County. 

Despite the weather the Gasparilla Bowl went on as scheduled at Raymond James Stadium Thursday night. USF lost the game to Marshal 38-20.

Despite the red tide and boating accidents the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has good news regarding our manatee population. The estimated some 7,500 to 10,300 manatees our in our state waters. That’s a nice increase increase from previous estimates of roughly 6,000.

The Florida State Fair has some 400 job openings to fill. You can apply online for positionslike ticket scanners, greeters, guest services, décor assistants and more. The Fair runs at the State Fairgrounds in Tampa February 7th - 18th.

Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Holiday Tragedy

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s office is dealing with the loss of one of their own, along with his family yesterday. Deputy Sheriff Terry Strawn took his own life along with  that of his wife, daughter and granddaughter. Nine men were arrested yesterday and faces charges of animal cruelty, animal fighting or baiting, conspiracy to commit racketeering among many more. They set bait for the bears and let dogs go after them. Attorney General Pam Bondi announced the arrests at a press conference at ZooTampa at Lowry Park yesterday to talk about the year-long investigation.

It was one Clearwater man who caused four separate hit-and-run crashes on US 19 yesterday. Jason Mizerski had his his license permanently revoked for too many DUI’s. After yesterday’s wrecks he’s facing multiple charges that include four counts of felony DUI with property damage. Two people were taken to the hospital.

Better news for those of us who use  McMullen Booth today, A construction crew hit a gas main yesterday which shut down McMullen Booth in both directions for most of rush hour. Repairs were made but only the northbound lanes opened around 7 pm. The southbound lanes reopened early this morning.

The Tampa Bay Bucs will play a game in Mexico City or London next season as part of the NFL’s international games. No dates have been announced but other NFL teams participating include Jacksonville, Los Angeles Raiders and Rams and Oakland.

Four of the top leaders at Johns Hopkins All Childrens Hospital have resignedincluding President, Vice Dean and Physician-in-Chief Dr. Jonathan Ellen. They stepped down after a Tampa Bay Times report on deaths and other serious issues in the the cardiovascular surgery division. The board is conducting a comprehensive external review of the division.

The Tampa Bay Rays deal for a move to Ybor City is dead. Rays President Matt Silverman said they ran out of time to make the deal. It now appears the Rays will stay at the Trop until their lease ends in 2027.

Four of the top leaders at Johns Hopkins All Childrens Hospital have resigned including President, Vice Dean and Physician-in-Chief Dr. Jonathan Ellen. The board is conducting a comprehensive external review of the division.
