Think Gasparilla “Light”

When New Orleans was forced to cancel Mardi Gras due to the pandemic, they creatively came up with the next best thing - house floats! So all the incredible decorations that would have been put away for another year came out of storage for the first official tour of house floats. You can tell from the photos it turned out very well, and now Tampa gets their turn.

A top-hatted dinosaur, shown Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2021, is among Mardi Gras decorations in the yard of a mansion on St. Charles Avenue in New Orleans. Because pandemic dangers from large and widespread crowds have canceled Mardi Gras parades in New Orleans this year, thousands of people are decorating their homes as floats.

No Gasparilla? No problem. Welcome to the Krewe of Tampa House Floats. There’s an interactive map on their site to take you on a tour around as well as an app to direct you to the participating homes. You can even rate them as you go.

The event runs through April 17th and I have to think a lot of you will dress in pirate style! Have fun and you’re asked to continue to wear your face covering and stay socially distant. And prepare for next year!
