New Disaster Recovery Centers Open; Blood Donations Needed

Two more disaster recovery centers are opening in the areas affected by Hurricane Ian. The first will be at Suncoast Technical College building in North Port and the second at the Department Management Services building in Fort Myers. The centers will make it easier for residents to apply for disaster assistance, file for unemployment, obtain food and legal service and more.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has brought Operation Blue Roof to Sarasota County to help homeowners with roofs damaged by Hurricane Ian. The federal program is free, but you do have to meet certain criteria. To sign up, start with applying an online portal by clicking here, or call the toll-free number at 888-766-3258 from 8 am. to 8 pm.

As recovery begins across Florida, many people have lost everything, so 105.5 The Dove is teaming up with the American Red Cross to help “Neighbors in Need”. Donations are now being accepted, and it’s as easy as opening the Dove app at 1055thedove or texting “IAN” to 90999 to make a $10 donation, or use the QR code. We’re working together to rebuild communities and help our neighbors who need us more than ever. Thank you for your donations.

The American Bar Association is also offering help to those impacted by Hurricane Ian with free legal help hotline for counties that include Pinellas, Hillsborough, Polk and Sarasota counties, as well as Charlotte, Collier, DeSoto, Flagler, Hardee, Highlands, Lake, Lee, Manatee, Orange, Osceola, Putnam, St. Johns, Seminole and Volusia counties. temporary bridge to Pine Island is now open for residents of Pine Island. Temporary repairs to the Sanibel Island Causeway should begin soon, and the Florida Department of Transportation plans to have that open later this month.

Manatee County has reopened schools and is also holding a donation drive to help those affected by Hurricane Ian. Check the school district’s Facebook page for details. In Sarasota, they’ll take a phased approach to opening. According to 10 Tampa Bay, the first district planning to open will be north Sarasota County schools, to the north of Taylor Ranch Elementary School, on Monday, Oct. 10th. The south County schools will most likely not open for at least another week.

St Petersburg Mayor Ken Welch has extended the state of emergency through this Friday. That will allow for power restoration and debris pickup in the city, and includes among other items prohibiting price gouging. The executive order was signed Saturday night. Hillsborough County has extended the state of emergency as well through Friday, Oct. 7th.

Donations are being accepted through the American Red Cross as well as the Florida Disaster Fund which has already $20 million. Federal disaster assistance will be available to those in Tampa Bay affected by Hurricane Ian. To see if you are eligible click here to check the FEMA site, or go to disasterassistance.gov or call 800-621-3362 between 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Florida Division of Emergency Management Director Kevin Guthrie said at yesterday’s press conference in Ft Myers 200,000 FEMA Individual Assistance registrations have been processed and approximately $70 million dollars has been paid out.
