Hold The Onions

There’s a very good chance you’ll need onions for a Thanksgiving recipe this week, but you need to know about the recall alert that has been expanded. These are onions that were imported from Mexico and have made hundreds of people sick with salmonella, including in Florida. The recall includes fresh whole red, white and yellow onions imported from Chihuahua, Mexico, and distributed by ProSource Inc.

Of course there are a lot of food safety tips to keep in mind for the holidays, and at the top of the list is making sure you’re thawing the turkey properly, keeping it at safe temperature and washing your hands after handling it. The safest way to make stuffing is to make in a separate dish and not inside the turkey.

But what about leftovers? Keep it clean there as well, with proper storage being the key. For all of the above, please take a look here and keep it handy throughout the year. And of course for all those last-minute questions, the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 1-888-674-6854 operates 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. EST, Monday through Friday. Happy shopping and make it a safe and delicious holiday!
