WASHINGTON (AP) - A first-quarter snapshot of the economy due out this morning is expected show a slowdown from the final quarter of last year. Economists surveyed by FactSet predict 2.5 percent growth compared to 3 percent in the fourth quarter of 2011. But those economists also predict overall growth this year will be greater than last year.
WASHINGTON (AP) - Interest rates on federal loans to millions of college students are set to double July 1 unless Congress acts, but the bill before the Republican-run House today would be paid for by cutting funds from the health care overhaul. That's something House Democrats don't like and it differs from a Senate-approved measure.
WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama is planning to sign an order today to make it harder for post-secondary and technical schools to misrepresent themselves to military students. The Obama administration also wants to trademark the term "GI Bill" in an effort to shield veterans and military families being swindled or misled by for-profit schools.
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Local officials in the cities hosting the major party conventions this year in Florida and North Carolina say they're feeling concerned and hamstrung about state laws allowing people to carry concealed weapons. They wonder if that's a good idea in a politically charged environment. Tampa officials are asking the governor for an order temporarily banning concealed weapons outside the convention center.
NEW YORK (AP) - New York City is prepped for an unusual flyover today as the space shuttle Enterprise lands at Kennedy Airport. Enterprise is coming on top of a modified jumbo jet. Its trip is to include low-altitude flyovers over parts of the city and landmarks. It'll be displayed at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum on Manhattan's west side in June.
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - George Zimmerman's attorney says he'll disclose more than $200,000 raised by a website created for his legal defense. Zimmerman was released from jail after paying 10 percent of $150,000 bail. Attorney Mark O'Mara says the bail amount may have been higher if the judge had known Zimmerman had raised $200,000.
CUMBERLAND ISLAND, Ga. (AP) - Authorities say the first loggerhead sea turtle nest of the year in Georgia has been reported on Atlantic coast. National Park Service biologist Doug Hoffman says the nest was found this week on Georgia's Cumberland Island.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Officers in Gainesville are looking for a man who they say posed as a police officer and raped a woman after telling her she was being detained for trespassing. The alleged assault happened Wednesday night in a wooded area near a partially-completed building.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Florida Gov. Rick Scott has to decide whether he wants to let two major universities raise tuition higher than what is currently allowed. Scott is expected to either sign or veto a bill today that would let the University of Florida and Florida State University increase tuition rates above the current 15 percent a year cap.
