FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) - A ruling is expected today from a military judge in Maryland on a defense request to dismiss the most serious charge against the soldier accused of giving government secrets to WikiLeaks. The defense has asked the judge to also dismiss five other counts and consolidate four more into two. If convicted on the remaining counts, Pfc. Bradley Manning could still face more than 100 years in prison.

 

     KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - A local official says three women have been killed by a mortar during heavy fighting between NATO forces and the Taliban. The official says the mortar hit a house in eastern Afghanistan. In the northeast, another group of Taliban fighters launched an overnight attack on a police post, killing four officers and abducting 16.

 

     TOKYO (AP) - Analysts have been examining photos of missiles shown off at a recent military parade in North Korea and have concluded that they're fakes. Analysts say the weapons appear to be a mishmash of liquid-fuel and solid-fuel components that could never fly together.

 

     PHOENIX (AP) - If the Supreme Court rules in favor of Arizona's controversial immigration law, it could prompt a change in how the United States confronts illegal immigration. The court suggested during oral arguments yesterday that the most controversial part of Arizona's law might stand.

 

     RENO, Nev. (AP) - Scientists say meteorites found in the Sierra foothills along the path of a flaming fireball that shook parts of Northern California and Nevada are some of the more primitive types, dating to the early formation of the solar system billions of years ago. The meteor that exploded into a fireball over the weekend was about the size of a minivan.

 

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - The U.S. Postal Service is offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of two people who robbed a mail carrier at gunpoint in Tampa.  The mail carrier was sorting mail in his truck Wednesday when police say he felt a gun at his side.   Police say the man told the mail carrier to drive to another location. When they arrived, the suspect asked him where the checks were. Authorities believe the robbers were looking for federal income tax returns.  The Tampa Tribune (http://bit.ly/JY1LHm ) reports the mail carrier told him the checks might be in a tray. The suspect dumped the contents into a backpack and fled. He was joined at that point by a second man.

 

  WASHINGTON (AP) - Sen. Marco Rubio has outlined his vision of a more muscular American foreign policy as Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney begins the search for a running mate. Rubio spoke Wednesday at the centrist Brookings Institution Wednesday days after he campaigned with Romney, and unveiled a new immigration proposal that breaks ranks with some in his own party.

 

     ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - The website that George Zimmerman set up to help raise money for his legal defense has been disabled. It was created almost two weeks ago by Zimmerman's family members. Zimmerman is charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

 

     TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - The Florida Highway Patrol is releasing a report on the fog- and smoke-shrouded Interstate 75 crash that killed 11 people in January. The inspector general's report on whether state troopers erred when they reopened the highway shortly before the massive pileup is due out Thursday.

 

ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. (AP) - Police say a Walmart greeter did more than welcome shoppers to a store north of Tampa. Zephyrhills police say 34-year-old Frederick Leon Gallimore is charged with felony retail theft.
