  NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Billions of dollars in claims against BP for the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill are on the line today as federal judge in New Orleans holds a hearing on a proposed class-action settlement. Attorneys are seeking U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier's preliminary approval of the settlement which is designed to resolve more than 100,000 claims.

 

     WASHINGTON (AP) - One of the biggest cases of the Supreme Court term is set to be argued today. It involves Arizona's tough "show me your papers" immigration law. Five other states have similar laws, parts of which also are on hold pending the high court's eventual decision.

 

     ST. LOUIS (AP) - Authorities say there's been a safe resolution to the case of a missing 5-year-old boy. The young heart patient taken from a St. Louis hospital by his father has been found just outside Chicago. The father is in custody.

 

     KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - NATO says that two service members have been killed in separate attacks in southern Afghanistan, while two others have died of non-battle injuries. Meanwhile, NATO's top military officer says Afghan security forces are becoming increasingly more effective in their fight against insurgents.

 

     JERUSALEM (AP) - Israel's military chief has put himself at odds with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the subject of Iran's controversial nuclear program. In a newspaper interview, Maj. Gen. Benny Gantz says Iran will ultimately decide against building a nuclear weapon. He says Israel is still preparing for a military action against Iran if necessary.

 

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (AP) - Authorities say two people died and another was injured in a shooting at a central Florida apartment complex.   Polk County Sheriff's officials say deputies responded to reports of shots being fired Tuesday night in Winter Haven. They found two men dead at the complex and an injured man staggering along a nearby road.  The Ledger of Lakeland (http://bit.ly/I8SgoM ) reports the injured man was taken to a Lakeland hospital where he was listed in serious condition.  Winter Haven Police Chief Gary Hester says a "significant amount of violence" took place at the apartment.

 

 

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Gov. Rick Scott's task force on Florida's self-defense laws, including what's known as the "stand your ground" law, has set its first meeting for May 1. Scott created the Task Force on Citizen Safety and Protection after 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was fatally shot in Sanford by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman.

 

     WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) - A former prostitute and porn actress says she had a yearlong affair with a Florida millionaire that ended when he was beaten to death. Rebecca Bliss has testified that she met Ben Novack Jr. through an online ad. Novack's wife is accused of arranging Ben Novack's killing.
