BEIRUT (AP) - Syrians have been pouring into the streets for anti-government demonstrations, in the first major test of the truce that was brokered by the United Nations. Activists say security forces responded by firing into the air and beating some protesters. But there's been no immediate sign of wide-scale shelling, sniper attacks or other potential violations of the cease-fire.

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) - It was supposed to be a moment of national pride for North Korea -- but it ended in embarrassment, as a rocket that was supposed to send a satellite into orbit instead broke apart minutes after the launch. It's a setback for the government of the country's new leader, Kim Jong Un, which was looking for a show of strength amid the country's persistent economic hardship.

MODESTO, Calif. (AP) - A raging fire that broke out at an apartment in Modesto, Calif., during a standoff with police has been put out. But police still don't know the status of the suspect in the shooting deaths of a deputy and a civilian. A police officer says authorities are waiting until it's safe to go inside. The fire broke out last night, hours after the fatal shootings, which took place as authorities tried to serve an eviction notice.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - The mayor of Newark, N.J., is describing how he ran through flames yesterday to rescue a neighbor from a house fire. Cory Booker told "CBS This Morning" that he grabbed the woman out of her bed, threw her over his shoulder and ran -- only to face flames in the kitchen, the only way out. He says he "punched through the flames," and escaped with second-degree burns on his right hand. The woman he rescued is hospitalized with burns.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Even though about 60 percent of drivers involved in accidents are male -- that's not the case for those accidents that involve drivers mistakenly hitting the gas instead of the brake. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has found that nearly two-thirds of those drivers are female -- and that the accidents tend to involve older drivers in parking lots. The study also finds that gas pedal accidents occur more often among drivers over 76 and under 20.

SANFORD, Fla. (AP) - Trayvon Martin's supporters fought for weeks to win an arrest for his shooting. Now George Zimmerman's attorney has begun what could be a lengthy legal battle to free his client from a second-degree murder charge. The first step for Mark O'Mara will be to try to get his client out of jail.

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama embarks on his trip to the Summit of the Americas in Colombia with one eye on improving foreign ties and another on an election year audience back home. He kicks off the trip Friday with a stop in the Tampa Bay area.

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) - The flight from southwest Florida is under way as snowbirds pack up and head home. Gulf coast tourist and hospitality officials say it was a highly successful season. Many hotels and property managers in the Fort Myers area report strong occupancy rates.
