WASHINGTON (AP) - The nation's Emergency Alert System will be
activated nationally for the first time this afternoon to test the
capability. FEMA chief Craig Fugate warns some video systems may
make it look like a real emergency. Fugate says that and other
flaws are being addressed.
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - OPEC isn't changing its forecast for
oil demand next year but has cut its forecast for world economic
growth to 3.6 percent from 3.7 percent. OPEC warns that uncertainty
has increased in the world's economic outlook as the eurozone
nations grapple with a debt crisis.
PARIS (AP) - The chief economist for the International Energy
Agency says that even though governments the world over have put
increasing energy efficiency at the top their to-do lists,
efficiency has worsened for two years in a row. He says the world
is hurtling toward irreversible climate change unless governments
cut fossil fuel subsidies and improve energy efficiency.
MIAMI (AP) - Forecasters are warning people in Bermuda and the
southeastern U.S. coast of possible dangerous surf and rip tides
from Tropical Storm Sean. The storm has strengthened slightly with
maximum winds of 50 mph. A tropical storm warning is in effect for
Bermuda.
BEIRUT (AP) - Angry Syrian protesters have pelted a group of
opposition leaders with eggs outside Arab League headquarters in
Cairo. The attack prevented them from going in for talks with the
organization's chief about the violence in Syria. The incident
highlights the deep divisions within the Syrian opposition.
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Authorities say a crane operator was injured
when the dock under the machinery collapsed in Tampa.
The accident happened Tuesday evening at the CSX Phosphate
Terminal.
The St. Petersburg Times (http://bit.ly/svcH5w ) reports that
fire rescue crews found a 40-foot-tall rail crane tilted on its
side over the water. Officials say the crane operator had multiple
injuries. He was taken to Tampa General Hospital, where he was in
serious condition.
The cause of the accident is under investigation.
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - The estranged father of actress Lindsay Lohan
is scheduled to appear in Tampa court.
Wednesday's hearing at Hillsborough County Court will deal with
Michael Lohan's domestic violence charges.
Lohan was first arrested on Oct. 25. His bail was set at $5,000
and a judge warned him not to make any contact with Kate Major, his
on-and-off girlfriend. Two days later, he was accused of violating
the terms of his release by making a harassing phone call to her.
On Tuesday, Lohan appeared in a Sarasota County courtroom, where
Major had filed a domestic violence injunction.
In an unrelated matter, Los Angeles authorities say Major was
arrested early Monday after committing battery at Los Angeles
International Airport.
