I think I owe Gulfport an apology. It’s been way too long since you and I spent some quality time together and this past weekend’s GeckoFest was an awfully good excuse for Kelly’s Kitchen to grab breakfast with my coworkers Val and Ashley at Stella’s.

Wondering about the unusual logo? Stella’s was named for owner Barbara Banno’s Aunt Stella was a Dominican nun who loved to cook and Barbara  decided to honor her aunt’s memory with her restaurant on Beach Drive in Gulfport.

Ashley was the one who made the suggestion for Stella’s and it was a good one. We had cozy sidewalk table and thanks goodness for the umbrellas! Just a little warm…but that’s why we decided to start with dessert. Like we needed an excuse! But since we had decided the Berry Crème Cake did have a two of the more important food groups it was a safe bet. You know, whipped cream (dairy) and three kinds of berries (fruit) it was just fine. The guilt factor was also low when you order one slice to share.

Stella’s had me at the mere mention of the daily special of Crab Cakes Benedict, and they were very good. You’ll notice I had my hollandaise on the side and that worked so well. Just a touch was all they needed since the perfectly poached eggs perched on two very generous crab cakes provided more than enough gooey goodness on their own.

Other choices at the table were the Shrimp and Grits and a more than generous Breakfast Burrito. Suffice to say the plates had very little left on them, and it was a good start to a very warm day. And as you see it's pet friendly on the patio!  Stella’s is also well known for what they consider their signature dishes of Corned Beef Hash and Fried Green Tomatoes. Next time!

Stella’s is open for breakfast and lunch seven days a week from 7 am to 2 pm, and when you’re a “regular” you just might be lucky enough to have your personal mug hanging on the wall and ready for that morning jolt. The prices are very reasonable, the servers friendly and the view at of the Gulfport Casino at the west end of Beach Drive is a nice way to start the day. If you’re heading down for the weekend they also suggest calling for reservations for four or more at (727) 498-8950. You can also contact them at Find Stellas Deli and  Gellato at 3119 Beach Blvd South,  Gulfport, Fl  33707.
