Mother's Day and The Prairie Way

Fifi O'Neill
Fifi O'Neill

Think about a life that takes you from Paris, to Canada, and then to Sarasota, Florida. That’s Fifi O’Neill's life. Fifi lives a life that strikes me as gracious, loving and on top of all that, she appreciates the healing power of chocolate! I only had the chance to speak with her over the phone, but talking with her about The Romantic Prairie Cookbook was not only enlightening, but a peek into her family traditions just in time for Mother’s Day.

Fifi and I talked about what initially drew her to the prairie way and led to the creation of the book. Think honoring the environment, making what you grow what you eat, and along the way learning to appreciate and tackle different culinary skills like baking, pickling, even making your own cheese and more.  But you’re saying Ann, that’s a lot of work, and I don’t have a lot of time. Fifi understands that, and knows that a little give and take is necessary these days. She does see a resurgence in the green movement, and you’ll see that in the book as you visit families all across the US, including Florida. You'll see how they are living their lives and giving back at the same time. I always treasure the recipes I know have been handed down from generation to generation and you’ll find those in The Romantic Prairie Cookbook. Fifi also uses something that I do as well; using quotations for inspiration! Now you know why I love my Words of Wisdom.

Fifi and I also think alike when it come to our cooking, in that simple can be the best. We talked about what her family traditions were like growing up, and how those same traditions touch her life, especially for Mother’s Day. And yes, how a little bit of chocolate can transform a bad day into a great one! Some of my favorite recipes in The Romantic Prairie Cookbook that I’m going to give a try are the lavender blueberry pancakes and the dark chocolate raspberry cookies.

Fifi O’Neill has led a full life as a restaurant owner, editor, writer, photo stylist and author, and also most importantly, as a Mom. Happy Mother’s Day Fifi, and please enjoy our complete interview here. Make sure you also "like" her on Facebook!

WORDS OF WISDOM FROM KELLY’S KITCHEN

No language can express the power, and beauty, and heroism, and majesty of a mother's love.  It shrinks not where man cowers, and grows stronger where man faints, and over wastes of worldly fortunes sends the radiance of its quenchless fidelity like a star.  ~Edwin Hubbell Chapin
