Kitchen as Spa

Cranberry Orange Scones
Cranberry Orange Scones

Previous Posts

It was one of those Sunday mornings; an extra hour’s sleep thanks to the time change, cool weather that made you want to either just laze around, or get up and enjoy the day. I chose both!

The honest Ann Kelly here...once I enjoyed a few extra hours of chill time, it was time to accomplish a little something. So with the windows open, sunshine spilling it, and the oven ready to go, I decided to make one of my favorite bunch delicacies. Cranberry Orange Scones, from a recipe that the always elegant and understated Ina Garten, the Barefoot Contessa, has on The Food Network site. I love watching Ina - do you think she’s ever raised her voice to Jeffery?! The scones are from heaven, especially warm from the over. One of those, a glass of fresh orange juice, and it was time to walk outside to enjoy a spectacular day. It felt like I’d created my own little spa world without leaving the neighborhood. I hope you have the time to make some of these yourself, and an extra batch to keep for guests in the freezer. A couple of food notes; don’t skip the step with tossing the cranberries with flour. Whenever you use something like berries in a recipe, you do that so they’ll stay evenly distributed in the scone, muffins, etc. Otherwise everything ends on the the bottom. Kind of like not stirring the fruit up from the bottom of your yogurt. I’ll be sharing them with my coworkers this week when we have our monthly staff breakfast. How to make friends and influence co-workers!

A few items of note to start the work week; thanks to Leda Eaton, Fishhawk Turkey Trot Race Director who I met at Fifth Third Bank’s Community Day Celebration last Saturday in Lithia. Couldn’t have asked for a nicer day there as well. Beautiful community and the folks from Fifth Third were warm and welcoming. Leda wants you to know that registration is now open, for the whole family to enjoy a good walk after too much turkey and to help Feeding America Tampa Bay. Now, that’s giving thanks. Please visit their site and start a family tradition! Residents can register at the local YMCA (FishHawk, Campo and Brandon).

We also have word that Pinellas County will have their food truck rally Saturday the 19th from 11 am - 3 pm, 500 West Bay Drive in Largo. Let’s support the local economy and chow down. Like them on Facebook to stay in the loop for upcoming events, and remember that Tampa holds their Food Truck Fiesta as well the first Wednesday of each month downtown. I’ll be talking with Mayor Bob Buckhorn and see which truck treat he can’t live without. If you'd like to show your support of local food trucks, join the crew on Facebook.

WORDS OF WISDOM FROM KELLY’S KITCHEN

The other thing is quality of life; if you have a place where you can go and have a picnic with your family, it doesn't matter if it's a recession or not, you can include that in your quality of life. - Jim Fowler
