Day one of the trial of Dee-Dee Moore, the woman accused of killing Polk County lottery winner Abraham Shakespeare ended with Moore’s ex-husband James testifying he was the one the unknowingly dug the grave after his former wife asked him to dig a hole for debris. If Moore is convicted, she faces life in prison. She’s claiming a drug dealer actually killed Shakespeare.

The two men accused of running a dog fighting operation for at least twenty years on property in rural Seffner had their first court appearances yesterday. Vanny Franklin is being held on bail and his nephew Russell Franklin had his bond revoked. Investigators were back on the property on Stark Road yesterday gathering more evidence. Two winning tickets were sold for last night’s record breaking Powerball drawing with the the grand prize total topping out at $579.9 million. One ticket was sold in Missouri, and the second in Arizona.

A story in this morning’s Times says the Clearwater Police Department is conducting a criminal investigation of one of its own officers for the illegal use of a state database. It was used to help a Palm Harbor woman get information on her estranged husband. Lt. Richard Crean has worked for Clearwater PD for 21 years, and could carry a sentence of five years if charged.
