A seventeen-year old boy who police say was defending his mother shot and killed his father over the weekend. Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the home in Plant City where Christopher Thorpe was allegedly strangling his wife Jill. Their son fired several shots, striking both and killing the father. Jill Thorpe was taken to Lakeland Regional Hospital and was treated and released. Her son is in her custody.

A St Pete woman who witnesses say was riding a manatee off Ft DeSoto earlier this year was arrested at work Saturday morning. Ana Gutierrez is charged with violating the Florida Manatee Sanctuary Act. She could face a $500 fine or up to 60 days in the county jail if convicted of the second-degree misdemeanor, and was released on bond Saturday.

The trial of Dee-Dee Moore, the woman accused of killing Polk County lottery winner Abraham Shakespeare begins today. Several national media outlets are in town to cover the trial of the woman who is accused of burying the body behind a home in Plant City.
