St Pete City Council heard a new report on the red light cameras that are supposed to make streets safer yesterday, and it was a little confusing. The study showed that red light runner crashes have decreased by 25 percent, but overall crashes are up 10 percent. That same report shows the cameras have caught more than 36,000 drivers running lights, and the city has collecting more than $700,000 in fines. But the total is about 17 percent less than they thought. Which intersection is the worst? Those cameras caught the most drivers running red lights at the intersection of 34th Street and 38th Avenue North.

The US Postal Service has decided not to lend their support as they have in past years to the Toys for Tots toy drive, and that has campaign officials extremely concerned. In the past the Post Office has delivering flyers about their collection for free, and that stopped this year so many people were unaware of the drive. That and the NHL lockout cancelled two scheduled collection events. Organizers for Toys for Tots say they could be 100,000 toys short.

A Hillsborough County man and his stepson have both been arrested and charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon after another Tampa teen was attacked and badly beaten at a bus stop on Thursday. 30 year old James Shields actually drove his stepson to the bus stop on Causeway Blvd and encouraged him to attack the other boy, who has since been released from the hospital. The whole thing allegedly began with an argument two weeks ago.

Former Florida Governor Charlie Crist made his switch to the Democratic Party official yesterday. For the former Republican, turned Independent, now Democrat, it could mean a run for the Governor’s office in 2014.

Look hard enough around Tampa Bay and you can actually find gas for under $3 a gallon. A story in the Times says the average price per gallon in the Tampa Bay area is $3.21, compared to $3.22 last year and $3.25 a month ago but prices are dropping.
