Olympic Gold for "The Fab Five"

   They’re now known as The Fab Five - the US Women’s Gymnastics team takes the team gold medal in London; that makes it only the second gold for US women in Olympic history; and Michael Phelps wins gold in the 4 x 200 freestyle relay and breaks the Olympic medal for most medals earned with 19. He also picked up silver for the 200 meter butterfly, a race he was favored to win.

   President Obama will be in Winter Park tomorrow at Rollins College. Doors will open for the event at noon. The event is estimated to begin at 2:40 p.m. The president canceled his visit to Rollins College July 20 in the wake of the shooting in Aurora Colorado

   Thanks to the wet weather, SWTMD has eased our watering restrictions. If you live in Pinellas, Hillsborough, Pasco and Citrus you can now water twice a week on designated days during approved hours. Only Hernando stays on the once a week schedule. But SWTMD also asks to water only when necessary.

   Florida Education Commissioner Gerard Robinson has resigned in a letter to Governor Scott, effective the end of the month. The Board of Education will start the search for his replacement. They board members say they were surprised by the resignation, despite the criticism of Robinson over falling FCAT scores and that the testing system was in need of repair, but that they were trying to do that too quickly.

   Rays and James Shields shut out Oakland last night 8-0, with Shields allowing only 3 hits. The Rays come home this weekend starting Friday night for a three game series with Baltimore. And if Hillsborough County wants to talk to the Rays about relocating, it will have to be a very public discussion. Hillsborough County Attorney Robert Brazel said yesterday can talk in general terms about places they might want to build a new stadium for the Rays, but not specific locations, among other things.

   The St Petersburg Domestic Partnership Registry officially opens for business today in the City Clerk’s office on the main floor of St Pete City Hall on Fifth St North; hours are 9 am – 4 pm Monday through Wednesday.
