Tater Tot ran back and forth in the middle of the night, finally waking up Christi Smith.
"He kept on whining and barking and running between the two of us," Smith said. The dog was nudging and licking four year old Peyton Anderson but he wouldn’t wake up.
"I checked on him, and he was barely breathing," Smith told Fox 9 in Minneapolis.
Christi rushed her son to the hospital where it was discovered he had a dangerous drop in blood pressure and Tater Tot was able to smell the problem.
"If his blood sugar was that low, he may have been producing ketones," veterinarian Isis Sanchez explained. "What, for us, is barely a whiff of something gives them a huge picture of what's going on."
Peyton was stabilized and doctors say the dog very likely saved his life.
Here’s the kicker, Tater Tot is a rescue dog and Christie only took him in a week ago. Her plan was to keep him as a foster pet until he was either adopted or put down.
As you can imagine, she’s changed her mind and Tater Tot has a permanent home.
