CAMP LINDYHOP is a series of LindyHop workshops to help move your Joy of Swing Dancing to a new level. Each workshop is on a Sunday from 2:30-5:30 at the Zendah Grotto in Tampa. PRE-REGISTRATION includes a discount for the workshop, a private link to the re-cap video, entry into prize drawing, and admission to Sunday Night's Big Dance. Without Pre-Registration it is $25 at the door. Join our legendary instructor, Nathan Foreman, for the second in our Summer Camp Lindyhop series. Nathan has been teaching social dance of all forms for the past 20 years. One of the most eclectic dance teachers around, Nathan has a connection based form of teaching that is perfect for teaching balboa, which he will being doing at this workshop.
"Building a better Balboa!" (Take your turns to a new level): Come refine your Bal-Swing and then take it to new heights. We'll be learning some variations on turns that are seldom seen in Tampa, then taking some of these variations and shaping them in different ways to create very different effects. We'll also demolish a few common misconceptions that followers make when doing Bal-Swing – things that would be fine in East Coast Swing but which really put a cramp on your Balboa style.
These classes will be progressive (the third building upon the second which in turn built upon the first) so come to all three. And they'll be geared to the non-novice dancer. Don't let that scare you though. We will start by making certain that we have a good foundation with basic Bal-Swing before we plunge into the great heights beyond. And because this whole series is on Bal-Swing and not on Pure Balboa, you wouldn't have to be flawless at Balboa to jump in. Anyone who did Ari Levitt's workshop would be more than up to it. Part 1: "Solid Foundations, and Variations"
In this class, we'll make sure that our turns are clean and balanced. Then we'll begin adding variations to those turns. Emphasis will be on clear communication between partners and dancing balanced, confident turns. Also, we'll note important ways in which Bal-Swing is NOT like East Coast Swing or Lindy Hop. Part 2: "More Variations, more Fun"
Continuing on from part 1, we'll do more variations to the look of our turns and on how we connect before and after those turns. We'll also learn a rhythm variation or two to use with them. And we'll again note important ways in which Bal-Swing is unique. Part 3: The Maharaja, (or teacher's choice option):
In this last class, we'll pile on as many other flashy, fun variations as we can, including one created by Hal Takier, one of the stars of the 1943 short Maharaja, which you've seen playing on the walls of Zendah Grotto if you've been paying attention. And we'll refine the steps so that you'll look the part of a Balboa dancer when you dance them. (Note that this last hour may change a bit but only for the better, bigger, badder, Balboalisciouser!)
