The story behind the importance of sport and commercial fish, how their existence serves as an economic and scientific driver not only for the region but the state of Florida, and the important role of research for sustainability and stability of this industry.A Sea of Sound, It's Noisy Down There! You think it’s quiet underwater but listen carefully. Listen to the ocean chorus – burps, whistles, grunts, clucks and booms – a symphony of strange sounds produced by fishes and humans through our mobile hydrophone exhibit. Ever heard snapping shrimp?Into the Eye: Hurricanes! Rain, Rain Go Away. Do you remember Charley, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne, the four hurricanes that roared into Florida in 2004? They dumped multiple feet of water into buildings, blowing the roofs off hundreds of stores and homes. The storms also created significant coastal changes and moved sediment, eroded beaches and created new inlets and destroyed others.Oceans: The Big Picture Satellites, A Big Eye in the Sky Satellites in space can “see” very large areas. Since they stay in orbit around Earth, they can continuously gather data about the same place. This helps us understand our oceans in entirely different ways. Satellites can measure water temperature, which helps us understand seasonal changes and how temperature affects the life cycles of fish and marine mammals. They can also detect chlorophyll and identify areas in the ocean where there may be more, or less, food.Tampa Bay: Species of Concern Keeping a Watchful Eye What is common to the manatee, the bay scallop, the loggerhead sea turtle and Gulf sturgeon? They are all creatures that live in Tampa Bay that are important to the region’s marine environment.
