QPR Gatekeeper Suicide Intervention 11-13-2012 3:00pm to 5:00pm QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer -- 3 simple steps that anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide. Just as people trained in CPR help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help. Each year thousands of Americans, like you, are saying "Yes" to saving the life of a friend, colleague, sibling, or neighbor.This workshop is ideal for professionals and the general public. Gatekeepers include parents, friends, neighbors, teachers, ministers, doctors, nurses, office supervisors, squad leaders, foremen, police officers, advisors, caseworkers, firefighters, and many others who are strategically positioned to recognize and refer someone at risk of suicide.This free two-hour course is limited to 20 participants to ensure an effective participation opportunity. 2 Hours of Continuing Education credit is offered for counselorsFlorida Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy and Mental Health Counseling - CE Provider # 50-462 expires 3/31/2013 2 Hours of Continuing Education credit is offered for: ARNP, CNS, LPN, RN Florida Board of Nursing - CE Provider # 50-9962 expires 10/31/2012All participants receive a certificate of completion. Workshop content includes:Definition of a Gatekeeper and their role,Overcoming negative, emotional reactions to suicide,Basic understanding of suicidal behavior,Definition of suicidal behavior,Review and listing of multiple warning signs,Depression as a risk factor for suicide,Alcohol as a risk factor for suicide,Domestic Violence as a risk factor for suicide,Review of progressive QPR steps and sample questions,Brief tutorial on active listening,How to deal with resistance,What to do in the event the person refuses help,Recommendations on removal of means of suicideThe value of hope and faith in preventing suicide.Crisis Center of Tampa Bay facilitators are certified QPR instructors. Workshop ObjectivesAfter attending this workshop you will:Understand suicide as a national and local public health problem,Understand the common myths and facts surrounding suicidal behavior,Recognize and identify at least three suicide warning signs,Describe the relationships of untreated clinical depression and other mental health illnesses and substance abuse to increased suicide risk,Understand how domestic violence impacts suicidal thinking,Recognize and identify three risk factors for suicide,Recognize and identify three protective factors against suicide,Describe community and national resources and how to access them.  This workshop available for presentation at your business or organization.
